Specificity: Anti-HSV (Clone HSV-7315) has known reactivity for glycoprotein D (gD) of HSV 1 & 2. Antigen: Glycoprotein D, gD Background: Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) are two closely related enveloped DNA viruses that are members of the Herpesviridae family of viruses. HSV is a neurotropic virus that initially infects and replicates in epithelial cells of the mucosal epithelium before it establishes lifelong latent infection within sensory neurons. While both viruses can cause genital infection, HSV-2 is most often the cause of these infections. HSV-1 is typically spread during childhood and has a global prevalence of about 90%. Both viruses can be spread to other tissues via contact with infected skin or mucous membranes. Glycoprotein D (gD) is the major receptor binding protein of HSV and binds to at least one of the three known entry receptors: herpesvirus entry mediator (HVEM), nectin-1, and 3-O sulfated heparan sulfate.
