Benserazide hydrochloride is a peripheral inhibitor of the enzyme aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (AAAD). It is widely used in research, particularly in in vivo models of Parkinsons disease, to prevent the peripheral conversion of levodopa and thereby increase its central bioavailability for neurological studies.
